Founding Idea
In the faculties for construction engineering, mechanical engineering, mining, metallurgical engineering and geological science of the Rhenish-Westphalian Technichal University, there are powerful institutes, which deal with steel research and application. The research tasks and result expectations of industrial partners demand an increasing multidisciplinary cooperation above the special fields. Furthermore, a coherent regarding of manufacturing, treatment and appliction of materials with a direct practice referance is necessary for the teaching. Therfore, the following institutes merged to the non commercial society called "Zentrum Metallische Bauweisen (zmb) e.V."

The association of these institutes leads to a coupling of professional competencies of various fields and by that offers the possibility to present closed process chains in intimate co-operation, beginning from material choice up to the finished product.
Aims
In the Centre for Metallic Design research-, education- and information activities, especially for new solutions in steel, are bundled. In alternating exhibitions, demonstration objects are presented to the university public and to experts. In practice-oriented research projects the development, manufacturing and examination of innovative large-size components out of steel and composite steels as well as the development of lightweight components is performed in multidisciplinary co-operation. For students of various fields and for skilled workers with practice, in teaching and further education courses the developed solutions are presented and discussed.
